What is Canstruction?

Canstruction Canstruction® is the most unique food charity in the world!

Canstruction® is owned by the Society for Design Administration and is a Trademarked design/build competition currently held in cities throughout the United States, Canada, Columbia, Australia, and New Zealand. Since its inception in 1992, more than ten million pounds of food has been donated to aid in the fight against hunger.

Canstruction® combines the fun of a design/build competition with an ingenious way to help feed hungry people. Local prominent architectural, engineering, planning, and design firms, and students mentored by these professionals, create phenomenal structures built entirely out of canned food. The structures go on view to the public at South Coast Plaza in Costa Mesa each year throughout the month of September. At the close of the exhibition all of the canned food used in these structures is donated to the Orange County Food Bank, for distribution to shelters, soup kitchens and other emergency feeding programs.

Industry professional associations that have partnered with the SDA in organizing this local competition include the American Institute of Architects, the Society for Marketing Professional Services, and the Festival of Children Foundation.

What is Project Playhouse?

Project PlayhouseProject Playhouse debuted in 1992 and has become HomeAid Orange County's signature fundraiser. Since then, the event has raised more than $5 million to help the organization fulfill its mission to build and maintain dignified housing where homeless families and individuals can rebuild their lives.

HomeAid Orange County is a 501(c)(3) charitable non-profit organization that builds and renovates shelters for those in Orange County who find themselves homeless due to sudden job loss, catastrophic illness, spousal desertion and domestic violence.

The success of Project Playhouse is attributed to the incredibly generous builder teams who donate their time, talent and resources to construct each fantasy cottage. These whimsical playhouses contain working electrical systems and include such amenities as flat screen TVs, entertainment systems and video game players.

For six weeks the playhouses will be on display at Irvine Spectrum Center in Irvine, California where thousands of people will view the elaborately landscaped playhouse villages. The entire event culminates with an exciting live public auction.
